Can you eat sushi if you have sigmoid diverticulitis?

I have a friend that lost 1/3 of her colon to diverticulitis and eats it about 4 times a week. Avoid the sesame seeds which are used as a garnish. Your sushi chef may have them ground up if you prefer the flavor of the seeds. Edamame has about 10 grams of fiber, so I always order that to offset the lack of fiber in the sushi.

Can you eat purple sea urchins?

i have tried one. when it's in sushi it's called uni.

The gonads of the purple sea urchins of the eastern pacific rim, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, are quite edible and very tasty. The only problem is, they're a lot smaller than S. fransiscanus, the black sea urchin (the one you usually see in sushi bars). Smaller means lower yield and harder to prepare or eat. But yes -- you can eat them.

How big is a sushi roll?

It depends. Some are thicker than others. A Hosomaki, literally translating to "thin roll", is typically about 2 1/2 cm in diameter. On the other hand a Futomaki, literally translating to "thick/fat roll", is typically 5-6 cm in diameter. The size usually varies depending on how many fillings are in your roll, or (if you make them at home) how thick you slice your fillings.

Does sushi have to be refrigerated?

Yes because it's raw fish - and raw fish will rot if it's not refrigerated. Sometimes the raw sushi fish is soaked in rice vinegar to "cook" the fish with acid, but at the end of the day the fish is still raw and won't last an hour if left in a car in the summer with the windows up, in pheonix, arizona. Say "sushi fish" ten times fast!
