Swaroopam was a political power centre of 12th centuary Kerala. The literary meaning for the word is self figure or self form. They were powerful matrilinear joint families which claimed hereditary political authority. In this respect it closely resembled a tharavad. The various swaroopams are Kola swaroopam(Kannur), Nediyirippu Swaroopam(Calicut), Perumpadappu Swaroopam (Cochin) and Venad Swaroopam (Trivandrum)
