yes

I would say NO. Synthetic drugs are, well, synthesized That is, the final drug is a result of a recipe of chemical reactions to produce a final molecular structure.

Opium is not synthesized. It is a powder product extracted from (not synthesized from) a plant (the opium poppy). People were using opium in Asia years before we had much knowledge of chemical processes.

Actually, opium is not so much "a drug" as "a drug mixture". Still, all the chemicals therein are made by nature without further synthesis by man. In fact, Opium contains a number of chemicals that have biological effects, but the main two products are morphine and codeine - these are the only two useful naturally occurring opioids. No further synthesis is needed, these chemicals are in their final form.

By the way, don't assume that "natural is good" and "synthetic is bad". In fact, many synthetic opioids are more effective and have fewer side effects that their "Natural ancestors".

What are examples of narcotics?

Narcotics are drugs that alleviate physical pain, suppress coughing, alleviate diarrhea, and induce anesthesia. Natural narcotics are derived from the Opium poppy and synthetic narcotics are made to act like the major constituents of Opium (thebaine, morphine, codeine). Legal, synthetic narcotics such as OxyContin (oxycodone) and Vicodin (hydrocodone) are prescribed as pain-relievers but are often diverted for illegitimate uses. Heroin is an illegal narcotic, derived from morphine.

Quasi-synthetic narcotics are those which are derived from naturally occurring narcotic substances but are changed in the laboratory to have a more specific effect or to be more powerful. eg Heroin from Morphine. These are distinct from narcotics synthesised in the laboratory to produce a specific chemical effect in the body and not derived from a natural narcotic (such as Methadone)
