A tape recorder is a machine that records sounds or data onto a tape.

The tape is made of plastic (mylar, polyester) with a magnetic coating on one face of it. The magnetic oxide coating has its magnetic properties altered as it passes across a recording/playback head. The recording head is an electromagnet, with the pole gap arranged so that it aligns with the tape, amplifiers power the head and the magnetism alters as the data does and imparts this magnetism onto the tape.

On playback, the reverse happens. As the tape passes across the head, the magnetism on the tape induces small electrical signals in the head, which is then amplified.

The tape is stored on reels and a mechanism involving a capstan and rubber pinch roller, pull the tape across the head at a constant speed.

Tape recorders can have an open reel design, or contain the tape into an easy to use cassette. The principles remain the same.
