To teach in the public school system, you must have a bachelor's degree in an education program and state teachers certification. The Bachelor's degree takes approximately four years to complete as a full-time student, and provided the student takes the program as prescribed by the college or university. There are alternative routes for individuals who have an existing degree but without certification. Still, if you do not have a degree at this time, an early childhood education program at the bachelor's level is recommended. You can also choose to start the same program at a community college which would be less expensive, and you could transfer later to a four year college or university to complete the bachelor's degree.
