It basically prevents fraud. If someonestoleyour statement from the trash, they would have your credit card number, name, and billing address. Without the card physically in hand, they won't be able to do much (if anything) with it. Every time you attempt to pay with a card and they don't physically swipe the card, they ask for the cvv2 number for verification that you have the card in hand.
