The Hail Mary is composed of several parts. The first and largest portion comes from the Archangel Gabriel's address to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Luke 1:28) "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." (all Bible quotations are from the Douay-Rheims translation) The next part comes from verse 42, where her cousin, Elizabeth is addressing her: "... Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb." The last part was from a petition added by the faithful over the centuries: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death." Common usage over the centuries put Mary's name in after the "Hail", and Jesus name in after the "fruit of thy womb". The entire prayer - as we have it now - was first recorded in print in the Camaldolese monks' Breviary in the early 16th century.

The Catholic Faith has Saints. (As I understand) Saints are those people whome God has made his potent agents of his will. As I understand, they are given by God, power and authority that matches (or even might in certain cases, exceed) that of the angels. Angel actually is a title of the being's charge. Saint is as well. Angel means 'messenger'. Saint means sanctified, or holy. It denotes a state of being. Thus Michael, Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel, are known by their respective individual names, but also, each is an archangel (messenger w/ a specific/ unique charge), and at the same time, each is a saint. Saints are special, in that they are the ressurected faithful of Jesus Christ's servants, who are believed to be charged, or made able by God's athority, to interceed on behalf of those who ask it. Even those who do not specifically ask for a saint's aid by name, may actually be aided by one of those saints, who've been charged with aiding anyone who faces a particular kind of trouble, or need, that falls under any particular saint's individual charge of athority. Its much like going to a professor of science for scientific information, or going to a policman for protection from an assaultant, or to a doctor for medical aid, or to an undertaker for funeral services. Many saints were once faithful (in Christ) men and women, who faced extreme/ very specific situations, in their mortal lives, and became known for facing those challenges. Those catholics that are dead, and specifically beautified as a saint (officially acknowledged) by the Catholic Church, are canonnized by the Church's authority. From then on, amongst the Catholic faith, that person is known and recognised as one of God's holy servants, and specialists. For example, Joan of Arc is one of only two saints charged with the patronage of Chivalry, specifically. Its nice to know that at any given time, or place, a soldier, a policeman/ woman, or even just someone who takes a stand against injustice, in the face of overwhelming odds, or oposition, might be being specifically watched over, and aided by Saint Joan of Arc. Or perhaps Saint George. Saint Michael the Archangel is the champion of Christ's church. He is the MOST aggressive enemy of the Advisary's intentional and active, spiritual assaults on mankind. Saint Raphael is the guide to those who undertake journeys, or who are heal by medical skill, or even those who are assaulted by nightmares. Saint Gabriel delivered the anunciation to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and yet, is also charged with the protection, and guildance of the souls of the dead, ensuring the faithful pass in peace and into the Father's hands, unhindered, and unaccosted by any of the many spirits that might have designs to prey on any one soul. Saint Patrick was a very real person who worked to teach the ancient pagan Irish people about God's truth. He is the charged with aiding and watching over the Irish people and of Ireland itself. Saint John the Baptist, over the French and the nation of France. And the list continues with many, many, many more of these noble souls.
