Lithium is element number 3

Its nucleus contains 3 protons and 4 neutrons (Atomic Mass=7) and there are 3 electrons in orbit around the nucleus.

Since there can be only 2 electrons in any orbit. the third electron orbits in a second orbital path, further out from the nucleus.
