There is no "holy" text in Buddhism that is the equivilent of The Bible, Torah or Koran, which are thought to be the word of God. In Buddism there are many sutras, which are recordings of teachings given by the Buddha or other advanced Dharma practitioners. The Buddha said that no one should simply believe what he said, but we should all think for ourselves and discover the truth through analytical meditaion.

There are different scriptures for different types of Buddhists. Therevada Buddhists only accept the Tipitaka (meaning three baskets because it was originally written on leaves and collected in three baskets). The three baskets are Vinaya Pitaka (rules for monks and nuns), Sutta Pitaka (the Buddha's teaching) and Abhidhamma Pitaka (higher teaching. Mahayana Buddhists accept this scripture but also have their own additional writings called sutras. Tibetan Buddhists also accept the Tipitaka but also have their own sutras.

Buddha did not consider any text to be sacred. His followers decided to write down what they remembered he said as they were getting old. They never claimed the writings to be exact or sacred. Theravada uses just the writings of these as a reference. Mahayana has expanded the reference sources. The Vijarana (Dalai Lama) have even more different ones.
