The Shack is a self-published novel by William P. Young in which the protagonist has a personal meeting with [the Christian] God.
Young said in an interview that the 'shack' of the title is a metaphor for "the house that you build out of your own pain". The book recounts the story of a father whose daughter is kidnapped and presumed dead on a camping trip; the father cannot comprehend how God would allow this to happen.
Some time time later, the father receives a letter from 'Papa' (i.e. God) calling him to go to The Shack, a derelict building in the woods where his daughter disapeared, and there he meets with the trinity in person starting with God the father (a woman), then God the son and God the spirit. All are different and complete characters but know what the others are feeling and thinking.
During this encounter the father is brought to a place of healing (God does not heal him, but works with him to find healing). He sees his daughter in heaven and also through the process rebuilds his family. The time in the shack allows him to question God and come to his own faith.
The book addresses "the problem of pain" (how an omnipotent and loving God can be compatible with suffering in the world), and the journey which is taken to personal faith in, and understanding of God.
