The type of c\Christmas tree is commonly Pinus radiata. This, or similar fir trees are commonly used indoors at Xmas as a focus for presents, and to add some colour.

The "New Zealand Christmas tree" is the Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa), called the Christmas Tree because of its spectacular crimson flowers at that season.

A wide range of conifers from Europe and N America are grown throughout the country. Pinus radiata (Monterey pine) is a major commercial forest species, as in favourable conditions, the forest can have a rotation of less than 30 years.

There are a handful of gymnosperms in the NZ flora, spanning from the 50+m Kauri (Agathis australis), down to the 75mm high Pygmy pine (Lepidothamus laxifolius), a sub-alpine species. [This may be the world's smallest conifer.]

A number of the NZ conifers have an edible fruit enclosing a seed (e.g. Miro, Prumnopitys ferruginea).
