"Firefly" or "Lightning bug" is an English equivalent of "vuurvlieg" (Lampyridae family).

The life cycle of the firefly or lightning bug is as follow:

1. Egg, a few days after the mating of the female and the male;

2. Larvae, three or four weeks after the laying of the eggs in soil;

3. Pupae, one-and-a-half to two weeks after springtime emergence from winter hibernation;

4. Adult winged flying stage, five days.

There may be some variability in the amount of time that the firefly or lightning bug spends in the larval stage. The stage may last from summer hatching through winter hibernation to spring pupation. Specifically, larvae sometimes spend several years in wintertime, underground hibernation.
