The red stripe at the top of the flag which was originally orange, along with the white and blue stripes, are based on the heraldic colours of the coat of arms of Prince Willem of Orange, who led the fight for Dutch independence. On special days relating to Dutch history an orange banner is added over the top of the flag.

Each colour (red, white and blue) was part of the heraldic colours of the various Dutch kingdoms and noble Houses that ruled various parts of the Low Countries over the previous few Centuries. The current flag is intended to simplify the various complex flag designs of the former Dutch fiefdoms by combining their most frequently used colours into a simple horizontal tricolour.
