le coq, Marianne -----

Le coq - the rooster - for sports teams; whereas Marianne - the embodiment of the Republic (La Republique), dating back from the 1789 era - is a bust of a beautiful public figure found in town-halls, for instance. Its figure can also appear on stamps (40 years ago it was they used Brigitte Bardot's image!). There is also a reason why the cock is an emblem of France, it is supposed to be the only bird that dares to crow whilst standing on top of a midden! It is known in French as 'le coq Gaulois'. The other figure commonly represented on postage stamps and coins is 'la semeuse' - a girl dressed in classical (Greek or Roman) costume sowing seed by hand which is supposed to be a symbol of fertility.
