What is the purpose of a gland in electrical installation?

Glands in the electrical trade are used to make a seal between two electrical components. For an example; a cable coming into a weather proof junction box requires a sealing gland connector to keep the integrity of the junction box's weather proof rating where the cable enters into the box. Gland also used to ensure that the metallic armor is in contact with the cabinet on which it gets fitted. But these days where plastic boxes and plastic glands are being common this practice is rarely applied nowadays.(In India) Gland ensures that there is no unnecessary pressure, stress on the cable conductor, but firmly holding it on to while providing a reliable entry of the cable into the box. In North America any cable holding device that is not water proof is called a cable connector.

Can a train run on steam?

Steam trains were once widespread, and changed the world. A steam engine is an external combustion engine, meaning that the fuel burns outside the engine. In modern internal combustion engines the petrol or diesel burns inside the engine, and the gases produced expand and push the cylinders, and this motion eventually turns the wheels. In the steam engine the fuel burns in an external fire box. The heat boils the water to make steam, which pushes the cylinders. So it depends exactly what you mean by 'run'. Certainly there were and are steam trains, but the steam doesn't provide the energy to make it go, the fuel does.

Is gas turbine an ic engine?

Gas turbines are a type of Internal Combustion engine, however; Assuming that you want to know the difference between a recpirocating piston engine and a gas turbine engine, the simple answer is that ICE's (Internal combustion engines) create work by moving a crank that is connected to a piston. An explosion in the piston chamber pushes a piston (or series of pistons) attached to a crankshaft, which turns the shaft. The gas turbine works by turning a shaft connected to a turbine. The turbine is powered by a compressed feul-air mixture. A stream of gas is compressed with air and forced through a chamber containing the turbine. The turbine turns the shaft as a result of complex mechanics that control the movement and flow of the compressed fuel-air mixture. The basic mechanical difference: A reciprocating piston engine uses a linear "back and forth" motion to turn a shaft, and the gas turbine engines relies on a constant circular motion to turn a shaft.

What is turbine rated speed and What is maximum speed rise of steam turbine?

Turbine rated speed varies mainaly on the factors of Generating frequency and means of coupling to generator (viz trough a gear box or directly coupled and no.poles in generator). For exmple a 50hz generting frequency and a bi-pole genarator the turbine speed is 3000RPM. The allowed speed rise also depends on turbine design and generator operational range. Generaly the speed rise is restricted to Maximum of 10% of the rated speed.
