Cmdr. Howard Gilmore was a submarine commander during World War 2. As captain of the USS Growler during a surface engagement against a Japanese ship, Cmdr. Gilmore was seriously wounded by machine gun fire. Unable to get below after ordering the surviving members on the Growler's bridge to go below themselves, Cmdr. Gilmore ordered the submarine to submerge, sacrificing his life to protect the lives of his crew and to allow his submarine to escape. For this selfless action, Cmdr. Howard W. Gilmore was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
