Homer's Iliad is about the Greek war against Troy, in retaliation for the Trojan prince Paris abducting Helen (the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta).

Specifically, the Iliad is about a dispute between Achilles (the greatest of the Greek warriors) and Agamemnon (commander in chief of the Greek forces). At first Achilles refuses to fight, and even argues in favour of an armistice. But when Patroclus - Achilles' closest friend - is killed in battle, Achilles rejoins the siege and kills Hector (the greatest of the Trojan warriors) in single combat.

The poem is called the Iliad because the central citadel of Troy was called Ilion.
