In Japanese folklore, the Baku (spirit) is known as a dream-eater, performing much the same function in Japanese myth as the Native American dream catcher. Like the European Sandman, these are characters of myth and fairy tale and are not supposed to be confused with reality. See attached article for more information. There is myths about them but it up to you to believe. Personally I do not think they exist but are merely stories for myths can be a bit like Chinese whispers and if they were real it would be a known fact not a myth.
