The movie is based on the Plot device of separation angst- refined into a two-year time warp- the two characters correspond through the mail- but how the two year gap is sustained is not revealed until the end of the film- people are reluctant to talk about it. It is in effect time warp without science-fiction devices such as Anthony Flasks, Time Machines, suspended animation ( goes with the first device). Of course separation angst in various contexts- usually war, occasionally business trips, is a time-honored plot device that works better in songs than in movies- which have to stretch the plot out to at least 90 minutes- by itself separation anxiety does NOT generate dialogue- which after all is the heart of fiction.
