What is the Light Bulb?

A "normal light bulb" is also known as an Incandescent light bulb. These bulbs have a very thin tungsten filament that is housed inside a glass sphere. They typically come in sizes like "60 watt," "75 watt," "100 watt" and so on.

The basic idea behind these bulbs is simple. Electricity runs through the filament. Because the filament is so thin, it offers a good bit of resistance to the electricity, and this resistance turns electrical energy into heat. The heat is enough to make the filament white hot, and the "white" part is light. The filament glows because of the heat -- it incandesces.

The problem with incandescent light bulbs is that the heat wastes a lot of electricity. Heat is not light, and the purpose of the light bulb is light, so all of the energy spent creating heat is a waste. Incandescent bulbs are therefore very inefficient.

The light bulb is a bulb that lights up the room. A light bulb is more commonly referred to as a lamp. It is an element, usually of tungsten or some alloy of this, encapsulated within a glass globe which is filled with an inert gas and /or a partial vacuum. When electricity is passed through the element it glows or incandesces giving off light. Some modern Lamps are miniature versions of the long striplights or fluourescent tube lights. These have a gas inside a tube which supports an arc of electricity giving off a significant amount of light. These are up to 80% more energy efficient and last up to 12 times longer than traditional lamps.

Traditional, ordinary, light bulbs use this technology, virtually unchanged since Edison and Swan developed it.
Looking into a clear light bulb, you will be able to see the fine, coiled wire, stretched between two supporting electrodes. Passing current through the wire will cause it to heat up to white hot, providing light and heat. The air inside the glass bulb has been removed, or replaced with an inert gas, to stop the filament from actually catching fire and burning up.
Although our eyes get used to the light and consider it to be white, it is actually more yellow. This is picked up by cameras and can give a yellow/orange cast to the picture.
Modern digital cameras have a white balance control that can correct this colour mis-match.
