The O/D button will shut off ( or turn back on ) the overdrive feature of the
transmission . The overdrive feature is the normally allowed position but if
you push the O/D button it will shut off the overdrive and the O/D OFF light
to the right of your tachometer will light up
low flouid or bad trany.
You have a proble with the OD. Take it to a professional.
As long as this is an automatic car (manuals are very very rare) put it in D for drive and ignore it. If it has an OD for overdrive that is good as well.
When the OD (I'm assuming OD = Over Drive) flashed on my 99 Ford Windstar, it was the transmission going out. $2,500 later, it was fixed and never had an OD problem again! Good luck!

Bad news you need a new transmission. these were the first year type with o/d clutch pack instead of torque converter system. Simply put this is an internal problem complete rebuild. I went through 2 of these both ford OEM replacements the final solution was a Jasper Rebuild problem solved.
Magic Gas!
OverDrive Off
should be a button on the shifter, maybe its a small one, push it in and the OD light should appear next to the gauges.
OD stands for Over Drive and it just means that your car is adjusting its actions to save money and gas.
I just took my 97 in to have the switch fixed. Not only was the switch not the problem but is worst now. The overdrive will not shut off and the ford dealer charged me 800 dollars to break the overdrive. Make sure you have a switch problem. I could not find much information in my manual which is why I took it to the dealer who then shafted me.
