I assume you mean to distinguish between sugar and salt by means of a chemical test, in which case:

Since sugar is an organic compound, it will be soluble in organic solvents (such as mineral oil, butyl alcohol, acetone, etc), whilst the salt should not dissolve. You can then filter the salt from the liquid solution, before using evaporation to recondense the crystalline sugar. If you want the sugar to remain edible, I would recommend the mineral oil option.

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) should work in theory, however in practice, it is often available mixed with water, which will also readily dissolve the salt.

Compare 3 physical and 3 chemical properties of salt and sugar?

Both sugar and salt are white, very small, and grainy like sand. A few chemical similarities are that salt and sugar are both water soluble, humans need both salt and sugar to survive, and both can burn.

What physical properties would you use to tell salt and sugar apart?

Solubility, crystal size and shape, and taste are physical properties that can be used to differentiate between salt and sugar. Salt has a higher solubility in water compared to sugar, it typically forms cubic or rectangular crystals, and tastes salty. Sugar, on the other hand, has a lower solubility in water, forms more of a granulated or fine crystal structure, and tastes sweet.

Are salt sugar and water mixtures or compounds?

Salt, sugar, and water are all mixtures. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are physically intermingled but retain their individual properties. In the case of salt sugar and water, each component can be separated by physical means, such as filtration or evaporation.

What substance when mixed together maintain their original physical properties?

When mixing substances that maintain their original properties, look for solutions or mixtures where the individual substances do not chemically react with each other. For example, mixing salt and sugar together will not alter the physical properties of each substance.
