So obese women sometimes miss their periods. Overweight people have insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the cause of polycystic ovary disease (PCOD). PCOD causes the woman not to ovulate. This is a second way in which obesity can interfere with menstruation. Finally, a young girl who has not yet started menstruating is more likely to begin menstruating at an early age if she is overweight.
