"Broken April" is an English equivalent of "Aprilie spulberat."

Both the Romanian and the English phrases are translations of the title to a novel by Albanian author and poet Ismail Kadare (b. January 28, 1936). The novel presents to readers the short, tragic life of the main character, 24-year-old Gyorg Berisha. Berisha is guilty of the premeditated murder of another, for which he will forfeit his own life within the next 30 days.

In both cases, the crimes relate to the faithful carrying out of a blood feud between two families. Ironically and most tragically, Berisha's death will end the 40-year-old feud. The only reason lies in there being nobody left in Berisha's family to avenge his death. Berisha leaves behind no wife or children to mourn, memorialize or avenge him. So for the first time in 40 years, a murder will go unpunished.
