Snare drums, or snare like drums, are not new to the music world. However, the inclusion of the metal snare drum happened in the early 1900's and soon became the main drum in the lineup up percussion instruments.

Who created the snare drums?

The snare drum dates back to the Middle Ages, roughly 1300 A.D. While there is no definitively known creator of the instrument, it is believed to have been used in Europe during this time. In its original stages, it was a two-sided drum with a single snare.

What is best size of a snare drum and who would be best drum company?

I personally have a 14" Pearl Philharmonic Snare drum and I love it. It isn't as expensive as some of the other competing brands, and, if tuned correctly, it can sound just as good as any "higher-end" snare drum. Black Swamp is making beautiful snare drums right now, but they are pretty pricey. I believe 75% of the quality of a snare drum lies in the tuning of the drum. If you spend a decent amount of time tuning your snare, you can make lower cost drums sound just as good as expensive models. In general, however, if price is not the issue and you are looking for a quality orchestral snare, I would buy a 14" Black Swamp Snare Drum with a Di-Cast rim and a Sterns Calf Skin head!

When was the snare drum first used?

The snare drum has evolved over the years from the earlier medieval version called the Tabor. The inventor of the first modern snare drum is unknown, but it is known that it was popular in the military and probably evolved as a military instrument.

What does sustain mean concerning drums?

Sustain is the amount of time a drum rings or vibrates so that you can hear it. For example, a timpani drum has long sustain but a snare drum has a short one.

How a snare drum works?

It can be played in different ways, marching style which is more rudimental (look up the "26 Standard Snare Drum Rudiments"), clave style which the terms would be called "rim knocks", "rim taps", or "cross rim" depending on where/who you learned from, drum kit style which is where it is primarily used to strenghthen the back beats, and in the fashion of a tom when flipping the snare switch off. The list aboves shows how snare drum is often played but really the snare drum as well as any other drum or cymbal can be played however you want it to be, no one can set the limit on your creativity but you. I hope this is what you were looking for. If not then I hope you enjoyed the lesson. :)
