It can be played in different ways, marching style which is more rudimental (look up the "26 Standard Snare Drum Rudiments"), clave style which the terms would be called "rim knocks", "rim taps", or "cross rim" depending on where/who you learned from, drum kit style which is where it is primarily used to strenghthen the back beats, and in the fashion of a tom when flipping the snare switch off. The list aboves shows how snare drum is often played but really the snare drum as well as any other drum or cymbal can be played however you want it to be, no one can set the limit on your creativity but you.
