The Torah is the collection of the first five books of the Old Testament plus the rabbinic commentaries on it. Traditionally and according to the Jewish faith, the five books were written by Moses, who then passed the books on to the Jewish people. Some believers even hold that Moses only took dictation while God himself told Moses what to write down.
Modern scholars generally agree that the books of the Torah were written by several (at least four) authors over a long period of time and that many Jewish priests added to their work, somewhere in the course of the 7th and 6th century BC.
