Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand is known to be frequented by dubious weather patterns. In 2012 it received an annual rainfall of 14345 mm, twice the amount of rainfall in Fjordland, making it by far the wettest city in New Zealand.
Although the sun shines on occasion (a reputable 125 hours of sunshine per 12 months) this is often obscured by extreme cloud cover, making application of sun lotion unnecessary. Wellington is also charted by NIWA as one of the windiest places in New Zealand due to its unfavorable geological location on the edge of Cook strait. Moist air coming in from the cold Tasman seas frequently forms a low cloud layer which stagnates in the city. In 2011 this resulted in 75 of 215 regional flights from Wellington Airport to be cancelled due to fog.
These unfavorable conditions are generally attributed to the negative population growth rates that Wellington City has experienced since 2002. This is also often cited as the reason why Wellingtonians are being perceived by their peers as not funny.
