"Waaa" is the call of the Western Spadefoot (Spea hammondii).

Specifically, the voice of the Western Spadefoot is similar to the sound of a purring cat. It is repeated every 3-4 seconds. The call is quite carrying and from a distance is likened also to the sound of a handsaw. It may be heard in winter and early spring, after a rain event.
