An affix is a word element, such as a prefix or suffix, that can only occur attached to a base, stem, or root.

Examples of prefixes (placed before a root/stem) -

un + kind = unkind,

re + act = react,

mis + lay = mislay,

pre + fix = prefix.

Examples of suffixes (added to the end of a root/stem) -

reason + able = reasonable,

care + full = careful,

hope + less = hopeless,

danger + ous = dangerous,

happy + ness = happiness,

just + ify = justify.

im (prefix) + port (root word) + ant (suffix) = important

A root word is the main component of meaning in a word and provides the basis from which a word is derived by adding affixes or inflectional endings or by phonetic change.

Examples of root words (from above) -

kind, act, lay, fix, reason, care, hope, danger, happy, just, port.
