To use a star delta starter, the motor must be a three phase six wire motor. The extra wires out are the wires that are usually terminated in the motor housing as the star point. The starter, when energized, brings the star contactor in and closes the star point coil ends. An external timer times out after the motor gets up to speed in the star connection and drops the star contactor and closes the delta contactor. When in the delta connection the motor coils are then paralleled to allow the motor to run at full voltage.

Star delta starting is used to reduce the dip in voltage which can feed back to the primary line which makes other customers unhappy when their lights dim each time a high HP motor is started on the same circuit they are connected to. By starting in a wye connection there is less disruption of voltage on the system that the motor is connected to, by starting the motor at a lower voltage and hence lower inrush current. Some utility companies will not allow across the line starting on motors above 30 HP.

Due to high starting currents involved,having a star delta starting method is of importance since the machine starts at lower current when in star.As the motor accelerate to almost full load speed, its automatically connected to full load supply current (delta)thus reducing high starting currents that could have been, if started in delta.

Star Delta starter is used for those motors where the starting current is likely to be quite high. The motor first connected in star and few seconds later switched over to delta. It means that the motor is designed to run in Delta connection. It is started first in star to limit the high inrush of starting current. Once the motor started, its initial intertia, high troque are overcome then it comes to its normal delta mode.

Star Delta starter is used to limit the inrush of high starting current of a motor to a safe value. Normally used with motors starting with high initial torque and/or with a motor beyond a certain KW rating. (generally for 7.5KW or above, but may vary with specific applications)

The purpose of the Star Delta starter is to limit the in rush of high load current due to high initial torque, while starting a relatively higher rated AC Induction motor.

The motor first starts in Star and switches to delta after few seconds.

It is similar to starting a car in first gear and then switching to higher gear. You can not start the car in fourth gear.

If a motor is connected in a star configuration it will operate at a slower speed. This is the working process that a star delta starter operates on. At first through the starter the motor starts in the star connection. When the motor gets up to its highest speed in that connection it times a timer out , the star starter drops out and the delta starter pulls in and then connects the motor in the delta connection. This allows more voltage to be applied to the motor and it then speeds up to its nameplate rated RPM.
