The answer has to do with the function of leaves.

And what is that?

The advantage to having a leaf that is broad and flat in my opinion is that you can use it for many purposes. If you are lost in a forest somewhere and you find a flat, broad leaf you can use it as a cup to drink fresh water you find, or you can use it as a plate to eat something on. If you have several broad, flat leaves, it would also be easier for you to create shelter for yourself.

From a scientific viewpoint, trees that have leaves that are broad and flat can have greater photosynthesis because there is more surface area on the leaf so that it can take in sun and produce Oxygen.
