if we couldn't feel pain then if your body was getting hurt your brain wouldn't tell you to stop or move away from what was causing that pain, if the problem was great enough it could result in death.

Al though pain is unpleasant at the least, having pain receptors is necessary because it tells the brain something is wrong in a very obvious way so the body(you) can try to fix it. Say someone stuck their hand in a flame. Without pain receptors they would continue to hold their hand in there until it was burnt off. Since pain receptors are present that person would take their hand out of the flame well before it was burnt off.
Tonic receptors have little to no adaptation while phasic receptors adapt fast!
