advantages- can cater for a large entry with several leagues, ensures that everyone has the same number of games, all arrangements can be made in advance for fixtures to be set and fixtures to be organised
disadvantages- it goes on for a very long time, if you are in a lower it can take years to get into a higher one, you can end up with fixture congestion towards the end of a season
