Niihau and Kauai, the westernmost islands still above sea level are approx. 5 million years old. The big Island (Hawaii) at the Southernmost point of the chain is less than 0.5 million years old, and is still forming today. The whole chain is moving Northwest at the rate of 3.4 inches per year.
