The Indians ended 35 years of futility, won their division by 30 games and beat Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco's Red Sox in the first-ever division series and ended sluggers Ken Griffey, Jr., Edgar Martinez, speedster Vince Coleman, ace Randy Johnson, reliever Tim Belcher and rookie sensation Alex Rodriguez's Seattle Mariners' terrific Cinderella season in a 6 game League Championship Series. The 1994 Montreal Expos, led by ace Pedro Martinez, closer John Wetteland, sluggers Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom and Larry Walker, and skipper Felipe Alou worked altogether to put the Expos on the top spot in the NL East, 6 games up on the Braves on August 11, when a strike ended the season and playoffs. On that day, the Expos had a 74-40 won-loss record and were reportedly on pace to win 110 or more games, with 5 Expos making the All-Star team that year. Unfortunately, the strike forced to end the Expos' remarkable season and their franchise collapsed from the next season on and became the Washington Nationals in 2005, moving to the nation's capital.

Finally, the 1998 New York Yankees, led by ignitors Derek Jeter, Chuck Knoblauch and Paul O'Neill, sluggers "Chili" Davis, Tino Martinez, Chad Curtis, Darryl Strawberry and Bernie Williams, aces David Wells, Andy Pettite, David Cone and closer Mariano Rivera, skipper Joe Torre's Yankees won 114 games and lost 48, went on to sweep Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez's Texas Rangers, Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Sandy Alomar, Jr.'s Cleveland Indians and pound out a sweep of Kevin Brown, Greg Vaughn and Trevor Hoffman's San Diego Padres to win the first of 3 straight titles and the second one of a skein of 4 titles in 5 years to improve the 1998 Yankees's overall record to 125-50. The Yankees reached the World Series in 2001 for the 5th time in 6 years and in 2003 but reached the postseason 13 times in 14 years before winning their first World Series since 2000 in 2009. They may reach the playoffs again in 2010.
