The chicken is ferried cross the river and left on the other side. The fox goes next, and the chicken is brought back. Leaving the chicken, the corn is taken across, leaving it with the fox.
He then returns to pick up the chicken and heads across the river one last time.
the traditional solution to this riddle is over-complicated and makes no sense. for example:
"HERE IS IT LESS COMPLICATED: FIRST: you take the chicken across, (the fox will not eat the feed.) SECOND, you take the feed across, BUT BRING BACK THE CHICKEN..."
see, the traditional solution requires you to accept that you can't take the fox in the boat with the hen, because the fox will eat the hen, but somehow while you're sitting in a boat moving them around and leaving one on shore they're gonna be okay. this is kind of like assuming that your kids will act right when they're in public and you really, really need them to. actually, the fox and the hen will both happily take advantage of your lack of attention while you're getting in and out of the boat to eat what you don't want them to.
so here's a much simpler solution: take the bag of feed, beat the fox and the hen unconscious with it, then put all three in the boat and sail across. problem solved.
you take the chicken to the other side then take the grain but take the chicken back then take the fox to the grain and take the chicken to the fox and grain.
First take the chicken over, then bring the fox, put the fox down, take the chicken over again, put the chicken down, take the grain and bring it over, and finally take the chicken over.
