What is the application of computer in education?

Even twenty years ago, computers in the classroom was not as common as today. Yet, many school districts still do not have computer labs or enough computers to serve all students.

The potential uses of computers in education are endless and educators continue to develop curriculum and computer programs to enhance learning via the computer.

In grade schools, computers assist with reading and comprehension skills. Computer "games" emphasizing word use and spelling allow for independent learning. Also, children from first grade on learn how to use computers to create their own stories, which lays the ground-work for learning how to research and write term papers.

Math applications allow more students to individually work on problems, at their own pace, while a teacher oversees all students. Many students learn math quicker when they receive instant feedback from the computer program. 2+2= 6 ... the computer responds immediately, allowing the student to correct their own practice questions.

In science, computers offer access to images of every organism immaginable. This is more efficient and less costly than schools buying several sets of encyclopedias or having many students wait for a turn.

Individual and group projects combine skills from research, to writing, to graphics and allow students more ways to present information to classmates. Although schools still use poster board and ask students to make presentations, the ideas with a computer become endless.

Computer games are also beneficial in and out of school. They improve eye-hand coordination, help students to "think faster", and again, provide instant feedback for wrong answers.
