There is not a set height that the American Flag needs to be flown at, but it does need to be flown at the top of the flagpole. If other flags, such as State or POW/MIA, are flown around the American flag then the American flag needs to be flown above the other flags.

What state can fly it's flag at the same height as the American flag?

The Texas flag often is placed on a flagpole at the same height as the U.S. flag on its flagpole, and it's sometimes said that Texas is the only state that can do this. The explanation given is that Texas-unlike other states-was a Republic when in entered the Union. A (licensed?) tour guide of the Texas capital city of Austin tells this on his tours. It is an urban legend. All states can fly a state flag at the same height as the United States flag. However, if both flags are on the same flagpole, the U.S. flag code states that the United States flag must be on top. This urban legend has been spread by word of mouth for many years, but started appearing on the internet by at least 1994 on lists such as "useless facts" and "Texas facts."

What unit would you use to measure a flagpole?

It depends on the relative height of the flagpole. If it's short, like a flag mast on a boat or building, probably feet and inches would do. If it's very tall, like the flagpole on top of a building or monument, yards and feet might be more appropriate.

Why is a flag lot called a flag lot?

A flag lot is called a flag lot because it is a piece of property that looks like a flagpole. The flagpole is the driveway and the flag is the lot, which is stuck behind another piece of property.

Why are the stripes on the American flag before the stars on the International Space Station?

Adorning all American spacecraft and most aircraft is an American flag which appears to be backwards, or inverted along the Y-axis. This is an intentional design, with the following concept in mind: 1) Imagine an American flag, correctly represented with the stars on the upper-left quadrant, suspended correctly by a flagpole on the flag's LEFT side. 2) Imagine the wind suddenly reverses, or the flagpole moves to your visual right, and the flag is now suspended to backward, attached to the flagpole on the flag's now RIGHT side. Because the flag would appear backward on any vessel moving forward (flag against the wind,) and American vessels never retreat, it has been a unique point of pride to paint our science and military vessels as "forging ahead" with a backward-facing flag.
