Basically to tell the story of Simba and the adventures he went through to find his place in the circle of life. But you can see interviews of the writers talking about how they came up the story on Disc 2 of The Lion King Platinum Edition DVD which are also on YouTube found as "Timeless Themes - The Lion King", "Story Origins - The Lion King", "The Story Comes to Life - The Lion King" that could help answer your question.

Frisky, adventurous lion cub Simba "Just Can't Wait to Be King." Neither, unfortunately, can his treacherous uncle, Scar. When Scar's schemes leave Simba fatherless and alone in the desert, Simba is made to believe that he is responsible for the death of his father, Mufasa. Carefree warthog Pumbaa and meerkat Timon teach the forlorn cub their "Hakuna Matata" philosophy - no worries! Simba will need more than hakuna matata to rejoin the pride, confront Scar, and take his rightful place in the circle of life. Try watching it! It's an amazing movie!

"The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" is told mainly from the point of view of Kiara. She is the daughter of Simba and Nala. During the movie, Kiara ventures into the Outlands, where the remaining members of Scar's "pride" live. There' Kiara meets Kovu, and the two become instant friends. The entire plot line revolves around Kiara and Kovu making their way, and also about changing the minds of the two lion prides-- the Pridelanders and the Outlanders.
