The Military Academy at West Point uses several categories to decide on an applicant's admission; they are academic excellence, athletic aptitude, and leadership potential. There is no set GPA requirement, but in today's (Feb 2015) competitive academic environment, mid 3.0's are certainly very helpful.

Westpoint looks at 3 different branches in your resume: Academics, Athletics, and involvement with your community.

1. The MOST important part of entering a service academy is to prove that you are academically, athletically and emotionally/personally well-rounded.

A high GPA and high SAT/ACT scores certainly help but it is ultimately better to get a 3.2 GPA and be the top half of your class than to receive a 3.4 and be in the bottom half, because that means you are COMPETING to be the best. West Point is also a school that places emphasis on being a decent writer. If you can't write an essay to save your life then you have no place being in West Point. The minimum math there is about entry level calculus, so obviously math skills are something that you will need as well.

2. The important part of Athletics is to get a letter, since something like 95% of incoming cadets have some kind of athletic letter. Having a leadership role on whatever team your on is also vital. Being a team captain is a significant accomplishment, as well as any awards such as MVP etc.

3. Involvement with the community is self-explanatory, it means being involved with your local church/boyscout troop ect. Being personally well rounded can also mean having a musical background--singing,playing the violin, or piano etc. Doing something like that well shows that you are willing over time to master something difficult. It shows perseverance, which is one of the main character traits you will need to make it through West Point.

---The most important part is to try as hard as you can in all three areas. West Point is different than other schools in that it values a student who comes through under pressure, and if you can prove that you've tried your best in difficult situations (and your best is well above the average amount of effort and dedication), you should get in.

There is no requirement for the scores, although the average is around 580 verbal and 630 math. Generally, cadets SAT scores without writing come around 1270ish. Once again, however, there is no "minimum".

West Point WILL NOT accept any applications if your GPA is not above a 3.6

This means that at the end of every high school year, your GPA must be above a 3.6, otherwise do not bother sending in an application, you are only wasting your time and our time.

The USMA does not weight GPA but rather class standing.

For instance, if your class size is 500 and you are 5th the in your class you are ranked higher than someone who is 5th in a class of 50. In the entering Class of 2015 71% of the plebes were in the top 20% of their class.

Eleven percent of the Class of 2015 that entered in June of 2011 were Class Valedictorians or Salutatorians.

If you want to get into the Naval Academy, you need to have a grade point average of a 4.0. If you do not have a 4.0, it must be in the 'A' range. Also having a 4.0 doesn't mean you will get accepted.

Alexander Hamilton meet at west point?

The idea of having a military academy to provide officers for future campaigns was that of Alexander Hamilton so it is only natural that they honor him in this way. He expressed the ideas of the need for such an institution when he was Secretary of the Treasury during George Washington's administration. He probably should have consulted the Secretary of War first.

Will military service override a lack of extra curricular activities in high school when trying to get into an ivy league school?

Probably not, but for admission into West Point the answer would be yes. However to gain admission as an enlisted soldier at USMA you must be an outstanding soldier and must show evident leadership potential. This is the path I recommend to you to be able to gain admission into an Ivy league School in accordance with your current situation but keep in mind that the admission process for an enlisted soldier is tough and competitive and most probably you would need to attend the United States Military Academy Preparatory School first before being able to study at West Point. You also need to be under 23 by the July of the year you gain admission tot he academy. No age waivers are allowed. If you do make it into USMA and have graduated from West Point you then can apply for admission to an Ivy League school for graduate study and most probably you will be accepted due to West Point's high emphasis on extra-curricular activities and leadership, teamwork skills. Many West Point graduates have followed this path. For example, West Point alumni such as General John Abizaid, General Stanley McChrystal and Lieutenant Colonel Harold Moore have attended Harvard University. Good luck. http://www.usma.edu/ http://admissions.usma.edu/

Why did US President Thomas Jefferson found West Point?

Thomas Jefferson was the most unlikely father of the American professional army. He was fearful of creating a standing army that might threaten the civil government, but the needs of the country demanded a well trained military officer corps. There was a need for American engineers for the military. We were depending on foreign engineers at the time. West Point would be our first engineering school. Also Jefferson was losing his battle to avoid a national military; he favored State organized militia. After the Naval War on the Barbary pirates, and seeing the potential of war with Britain in Canada, Jefferson saw that a national, professional military was unavoidable and he felt that if there was going to be a permanent military officer corps that it must be trained not as a European style elite class outside and separate from the government, but as an instrument of the republic, in a sense as a "people's army". The requirement that cadets must be approved into the corps by their congressman is an example of Jefferson's measures to make sure the military was always answerable to the civil government.
