No, it is a desert breed of horse that is thought to have descended from ancient Scythian type (gazelle like and light bodied from the arid deserts of central Asia). "Akhal" translates to "pure". The horse was so named to identify with the Teke tribe, "Pure Teke" from Turkmenistan which was once part of the Soviet Union.
The Akhal-Teke originated in the Kara kum desert in Turkmenistan. it is the oldest purebred horse in the world, far older than the Arabian and one of the most influential founding breeds in the Thoroughbred.
