A desktop computer is a general purpose device composed some or all of the following:

  • A computer box on the floor, desk, or shelf. It includes memory, hard drive(s) and the ability to import and export information from elsewhere such as a CD or DVD drive.
  • A keyboard and mouse pointer to control the computer.
  • A display device to see what you are doing and what is happening.
  • The ability to connect to a network
  • A printer
  • headphones or speakers
  • microphones for sound input
  • A scanning device to input and read printed material
  • A camera

A workstation is a specially built computer configured for a specific purpose. It can also be a desktop computer configured and designated for a specific use. In many cases, a general purpose desktop computer may not fit the requirements for a task. It may not be able to handle as many devices plugged in or the types of devices that need to attached.

Workstations often have special devices attached to them or built into the box where simpler serial, parallel and USB connection are not enough. It may have extra large or multiple display devices or a small display device not useable for anything except its intended purpose. They are used as medical equipment or to control medical equipment such as Xray, CT scan, MRI machines or special operating room devices. There are workstations designs for scientific, laboratory, or engineering purposes, building management and security, industrial and power plant management.

Desktop computers usually consist of a screen, keyboard, mouse and CPU. Workstations tend not to have the CPU box - as they're normally connected to a file-server.
