The bassoon is a member of the double reed family and a part of the woodwind section of the ensemble. They are very closely related.

No, the bassoon is in a family of its own. However, both are related in the sense that they are double reed instruments.

The bassoon and the Oboe are two of the four members in the double reed family. The other two members are the contra bassoon and the English horn.
