A CSV (comma separated values) file is plain text file. But, the comma, doesn't need to be a comma, it can be any character you want. Usually, this character is Tabs, Semi-colons (;), Pipes (|) or Carets (^).

The benefit is that a CSV is commonly used to import data to another application. It is PLAIN TEXT and is readable by almost any program designed to accept import data. It is NOT dependent on certain application like Excel to be read.

CSV (Comma Separated Variable) files are portable, in that various applications can read them. This is something that is often needed to be done. When you have structured data that would be in a tabular format and you want to be able to read it in another application, then using CSV is a good format to use. The commas act as a boundary between cells and each line acts as a new row, and so the data can be read that way so that it can be opened and will automatically go into a tabular format in the new application, in the way you want it. So you could very quickly take data in a text file, save it as a CSV file, and open it in a spreadsheet or database and have it laid out the way you want it.

The principle advantage is that CSV format can be read by any spreadsheet program. As it is a plain text file, it can also be read by word processor or simple notepad programs.

What is the difference between ldifde and csvde?

CSVDE is a command that can be used to import and export objects to and from the AD into a CSV-formatted file. A CSV (Comma Separated Value) file is a file easily readable in Excel. I will not go to length into this powerful command, but I will show you some basic samples of how to import a large number of users into your AD. Of course, as with the DSADD command, CSVDE can do more than just import users. LDIFDE is a command that can be used to import and export objects to and from the AD into a LDIF-formatted file. A LDIF (LDAP Data Interchange Format) file is a file easily readable in any text editor, however it is not readable in programs like Excel. The major difference between CSVDE and LDIFDE (besides the file format) is the fact that LDIFDE can be used to edit and delete existing AD objects (not just users), while CSVDE can only import and export objects.

A user calls indicating that she has been sent a file with the extension CSV Referring to this scenario what sort of information can be expected in a CSV file?

A csv file is a Comma Separated Variable file. It is basically a standard text file with elements separated by commas. It is a common way of saving data from one application that can be opened in another, like between databases and spreadsheets. Something saved in CSV can be opened in any database application or any spreadsheet application. In the context of a database, each comma will represent the end of one field and the start of the next. In the context of spreadsheets, the comma will represent the end of one cell and the start of the next one in the same row.
