The purpose of the layered model is so that devices and protocols can function independently of each other without affecting performance.

For example, I can reach an FTP site (layer 7) regardless of if I am using physical cable or wifi (layer 1) and regardless of how my traffic is being routed through the world (layer 3). Considering the huge number of disparate operating systems and applications, it is easy to see the necessity of an open-systems interconnection model (OSI Model)

The idea of layered software is to encapsulate or limit what an area of software might do. The various layers give you the multiple protocols that networks will utilize.

If a layer specializes in just one thing, adding more layers allows one to add more functionality to the overall scheme of things. It is generally considered a bad idea in software engineering to put too much in a single layer; it is better to spread out the responsibilities of things in several layers.

The general networking model was OSI model given by ISO. It follows a layered approach so as to divide different functions to different layer. That is why any system regardless of the underlying architecture can communicate using it.

What are the benefits to using a layered model to describe network protocols and operations?

-Assists in protocol design, because protocols that operate at a specific layer have defined information that they act upon and a defined interface to the layers above and below. -Fosters competition because products from different vendors can work together. -Prevents technology or capability changes in one layer from affecting other layers above and below. -Provides a common language to describe networking functions and capabilities.
