What is the bermagui mystery?

The Bermagui Mystery is the unsolved disapearance of five men on the 9th or 10th of October 1880.

Over two thousand pages of documented evidence, Committee Hearings, public and private investigations, witness statements and correspondence made up the Police and the Department of Mines Files on the case. These two files are located in the Records Centre in Western Sydney and can be accessed by written request.

Despite the criticised efforts of officials to unravel the disapearence of the men no trace of the 5 bodies were ever discovered. At the time theories of accidental drowning and rumors of murder and kidnapping carried equal wieght. Stories also of a family fued now settled, a German with a criminal past and stolen gold mixed in with a government conspiricy to hide the actual truth added a sinister element to an array of possible plots and motives.

An article written in the Sydney newspaper, three days after the men disapeared, reported that four bodies were washed ashore 15 miles north of Bermagui. No further report or follow up investigation about this article in the files has ever been found. Was it a ruse to draw the search away from Bermagui and surrounds? If one was to find who caused this story to print may shed great light on the Mystery.
