well, really that's depending on the person, but in my opinion, if you have a squirtle, get a caterpie, pidgy, an Abra, pikachu, and one Pokemon of your choice. for me they are good to beat the Pokemon league. if you have another starter, you may want to get a good water Pokemon, like maybe the lapras you get.
i also started with squirtle becuz i want raikou later in the game, but my team so far i have rattata caterpie pikachu and pidgey, but i just started a new game so theyre not at any high levels yet i just finished beating brock
