In my opinion only 2D Sonic games are any good and the only ones since the Dreamcast were Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Rush 2 games, with the more recent Sonic 4. These games are all similar and the one with the least story in is the first Rush, so if you don't like story in your games, that's the best.
