It depends on how much money you're willing to spend and how long your arms are. Some kids start really young,(6-8) and because their arms aren't as long as the average player they have to get a special kind of Flute with a curved head joint. This is where that money comes into play. Starting that early can be an advantage when all the other students get into band and don't know half as much as if they would if they had started at 6 years old. The disadvantage would be: the kid might not like it and give up before they hit their stride. Most people start in middle school, 5th or 6th grade. Their arms are at the right length so you don't pay anything extra, and it's a class (so they've got plenty of people going through the same thing). Then again, it's always better to have a private teacher. They pay special attention to your problems. Hope I've helped!!

It is extremely rare for a flute to come with instructions. For help with beginning the flute, the best advice is to seek a private teacher who has played flute for many years. If private lessons are unavailable, look for a good flute method book such as Standard of Excellence or the Rubank method.
