There are a number of good 'heads', Gallien-Kruger, David Eden (by far the best, and most expensive), SWR working man, but a great sounding speaker cabinet is 4-10s. 4, 10 inch speakers. Hartke makes several great models, especially the ones with aluminum cones.

As a very simple an basic answer for you, if you are speaking JUST the bass by itself without considering your amplification and effects chain, then a Fender P-bass will give you a more retro smooth sound, whilst a MusicMan Stingray will give you a more rock or funk sound. But that's the tip of the iceberg and web those two different basses could be use in multiple different styles. So ... What sound are you looking for??
